History Department Update: From Cookie Excavations to Historical Research

It’s been a busy and exciting term in the History Department as students across all year groups have been engaging with the past in creative and meaningful ways.

First Years: Digging into the Past (Literally!)
Our First Year students got hands-on with the world of archaeology by taking part in a fun and educational “cookie excavation.” Using tools like toothpicks and brushes, students carefully “excavated” chocolate chips from cookies, simulating the delicate process archaeologists follow when uncovering artefacts. This interactive activity helped students understand the patience, precision, and excitement involved in uncovering the past.

Second Years: The 1798 Rebellion Brought to Life
Second Year students have been learning about the 1798 Rebellion and its significance in Irish history. To consolidate their understanding, they created a series of engaging and informative posters. Through colourful visuals and key facts, students explored themes such as the causes of the rebellion, key figures like Wolfe Tone, and the long-term impact of the uprising. Their work is now on display and has sparked great discussions across the year group.

Third Years: Exploring World War II
Third Year students have been deepening their understanding of World War II, examining its causes, key events, and global impact. To showcase their learning, students created informative and visually striking posters covering a range of topics, from life on the home front to major battles and the experiences of those affected by the war. The posters are now proudly displayed in our classroom, reflecting both the depth of their research and their creativity.

Sixth Years: Research Study Reports in Full Swing
Our Sixth Year students are currently hard at work on their Research Study Reports, a core component of the Leaving Certificate History course. This year’s students have chosen a fascinating variety of topics, including Amelia Earhart, Queen Nefertiti, the Battle of Gallipoli, JFK’s visit to Ireland, and Coco Chanel. Their dedication to exploring these subjects through primary and secondary sources demonstrates strong critical thinking and a real passion for history.

It’s inspiring to see students engage so thoughtfully with the past, and we look forward to sharing more of their work throughout the year.
