Before the midterm break, a group of Transition Year students had the exciting opportunity to experience a day in college at Sallynoggin College of Further Education. The visit provided students with a valuable insight into college life and allowed them to explore a wide variety of courses and career pathways.
Throughout the day, students took part in interactive workshops and practical sessions across many subject areas. These included Computers, Performing Arts, Hair & Beauty, Fashion Design, Art, and Yoga & Pilates. Students also explored areas linked to health and sport such as Sport, Health & Fitness (including blood pressure monitoring, adaptive activities and gym practicals), Sports Psychology, Motivation and Goal Setting, and Sports Injuries.
Other engaging sessions included Youth Mental Health, Child Learning & Development (How Children Learn), Sensory Activities for Young Children, and a fascinating CSI Crime Scene workshop where students learned about investigative techniques. A Guidance Counselling session also gave students helpful information about further education opportunities and pathways after school.
The workshops gave students a broad introduction to the diverse courses available in further education. The hands-on nature of the activities allowed students to try new skills, ask questions, and get a real feel for what studying at college might be like.
Feedback from the organisers at Sallynoggin College of Further Education was extremely positive. They commented that “they were a fantastic bunch who engaged really well throughout their time with us.”
The college weeks were a great success and provided our TY students with a meaningful glimpse into future learning opportunities while encouraging them to consider the many different pathways available after secondary school.
