On November 17th, the TYs all participated in a barista workshop. They had the option of making a mocha or a latte. Some of the teachers who supervised us also requested that the TYs make them coffee. They learnt how to do latte art. I really enjoyed the workshops. They made lattes, mochas, americano, cappuccinos, espressos, flat whites and hot chocolates. All of the TYs found the workshop to be really enjoyable and very useful. The two men teaching them issued them certificates for completing the workshop. With this certificate, it grants the TYs the ability to be able to go out into the public and work at different cafes. A lot of the TYs would really like to go and try out being a barista as a part time job.
The trainers started the workshop by teaching the TYs how to make an espresso. They had two portable coffee machines with them and they demonstrated how to make a shot of espresso. They first told the TYs the names of all the tools used to make or aid in the process of making coffee. They named the tamper which was used to compress the fine coffee powder after it was grounded. They named the portafilter which was where the coffee powder was placed when it was meant to be filtered. They named the knockboxing bucket which was used to empty the portafilter of the filtered coffee powder. They also told them about the different parts of the coffee machine like the steamer part which was used to steam milk and more. After that, one of the trainers demonstrated how to make a shot of espresso. After he made the espresso, he told the TYs how to make a latte and mocha and they were separated into two groups.
They TYs really enjoyed the workshop and they were really grateful for the opportunity to learn this new skill.
