Transition Year trip to Causey Farm

On Friday the 5th of September, the TYs went on their first trip of the year to Causey Farm.

The TYs were shown how to bake brown bread. Once the dough was finished, the tour guides took the TYs for a tour of the farm and the animals. The chicken were first on the list and the TYs were let into the coops. The TYs were able to pet the chickens and some of them even held a chicken in their arms. Once the TYs had seen the chickens, they were taken to see the donkeys. There were two donkeys, one of whom was named Shrek and the other named Donkey. The TYs were allowed to feed the donkeys and pet them.

After the donkeys, the TYs were taken to see the ducks. Next, were the horses. There were about ten horses grazing in a paddock. The TYs were allowed to feed the horses and touch their manes. After the horses, the TYs were taken to see the deer. One of the deer was named Bambi!

After the deer, the TYs were taken to see the llamas. The llamas were very shy animals and they kept their distance. After the llamas, the TYs were taken to see the goats. The older goat was called Puck and he had earned that name by picking the younger goat, Kid. The goats were eating barley mixed with grass when the TYs saw them. Puck kept pushing Kid out of the way like he wanted to save all the food for himself like a big bully.

Next on the list was the pig. Pumba was a big brown pig with rough bristles. The TYs got the opportunity to pet the pig though most of them were disgusted by Pumba. Pumba was very hungry and he devoured the barley out of the tour guide’s hands. After the pig, were the alpacas and the sheep. One of the alpacas was very rough and the other was very calm and let the TYs pet it. The sheep were very loud and one of them was baaing every few seconds. The TYs were allowed to pet the sheep and the wool was so soft. There were also border collie puppies in cages so that they wouldn’t nip at people thinking they were sheep.

There were two bunnies in hutches but the TYs didn’t realize they were there until the tour guide brought one of them out. Unfortunately, the baaing of the sheep scared the poor bunny so it had to be brought back into its hutch before all of the TYs got a chance to pet it. After the tour of the farm animals, a trailer arrived to take the TYs to the bog.

Although not everyone jumped in, the bog was the highlight of the trip. The trailer took the TYs to the bog and the journey was very rocky on the country roads. Along the way, the TYs got to see a few gravestones and an old church. Once at the forest, the TYs walked through the muddy forest to the bog site. There was a large ledge from where the TYs who chose to jump into the bog jumped from. It was very muddy, some of the TYs who wore an old white t-shirt emerged from the bog fully brown. Some of them even got stuck in the mud for a few minutes but they managed to get out. They continue to jump in and out, getting used to saving themselves from the thick mud.

The TYs thought that after the bog, they would get hosed down, the look on their faces when they were told that there was no hose and that they had to use their own towels was priceless. The TYs who jumped were told to go into the back of the trailer. They were not impressed at all. All the dirty people were very upset and the squeals from them were extremely loud. After that, TYs had lunch and visited a horror maze that was part of Farmaphobia.

As they made their way to the maze, they got to see one of the border collies attempting to herd 5 geese in the donkey pen. As they moved through the maze, TY’s were clinging onto each other as they screamed at the top of their lungs. The ‘scareactors’ were actually other TYs that scared the others.

After the maze, the TYs got their bread from the cookhouse where they began their trip. Everyone was so tired from their eventful day. In conclusion, they all loved their first trip of the year. The TYs would definitely recommend Causey Farm for future trips. TYs can’t wait for their next trip.
